- WHAT International NO PANTS 2010 mission
- WHEN Sunday, January 10, 2:00pm
- WHERE See below
For the 2nd year in a row, GuerilLA will be participating in Improv Everywhere’s NO PANTS 2010 international mission on Sunday, January 10, 2010!
| Range in which your birthday falls | Board at this station | Train Leaves Station |
|---|---|---|
| July-September | Union Station | 2:22pm |
| April-June | 1st St./Civic Center | 2:24pm |
| October December | 5th St./Pershing Square | 2:25pm |
| January-March | 7th St./Metro Center | 2:27pm |
We encourage everyone to travel pants-less throughout the Metro system that day. The main subway ride will begin at 2:00pm in downtown LA and will travel westbound on the Red Line to Hollywood. The plan is to board the train that leaves Union Station at 2:22pm and disembark at Hollywood & Highland. A bigger crowd is anticipated this year, so we are going to disperse agents among the four downtown stations like this:

Our best suggestion would be to quickly de-pants once inside your respective station (there are plenty of blind corners and columns which you can duck into or behind to be discreet), but we’ll leave it to your discretion - just be pantsless as you enter the main platform.
Please buy a ticket ($1.25: one-way, $2.50: round-trip, $5.00: day pass).
The citation for evading fare payment is $250.00, an unnecessary and expensive risk. And earlier this year, they installed turnstiles at the Civic Center station, Pershing Square station and Union Station, so there’s no avoiding fare payment there. Once you’re on the boarding platform, the westbound side will be denoted by signs that say North Hollywood/Wilshire & Western (you can also just look for the other pantsless passengers).
You can also check overhead video monitors that will say if the arriving train is a North Hollywood (Red Line) train or a Wilshire/Western (Purple Line) train. There are also electronic signs at the front and on the sides of each train telling you which one it is (this is particularly important at Union Station, which is an origin point, so check the signs because our train may be departing from either side of the platform). When the Red Line/North Hollywood train arrives at your station at the appointed time mentioned above, get on board and ride to Hollywood and Highland.
There are no set rules, but we suggest that if anyone asks why we’re not wearing pants, it’s best to give a simple answer such as “I forgot them”. And it is of the utmost importance that we act casual, like it’s an ordinary day on the subway. We should also look and act like we do NOT all know each other.
VERY IMPORTANT: this mission obviously means no pants, but YOU MUST WEAR UNDERWEAR!!!
You should be fully clothed except for pants. And since we’ve been asked about what types of underwear you should wear, we just ask you to use common sense. Last year, we saw lots of men and women in boxers and boxer briefs, men in briefs, women in panties (the raciest of which exposed just a bit of buttock), and one man in a lovely pair of ruffled light blue panties. NO ONE risked wearing a thong (and this statement is not meant as a dare). Any citation for indecent exposure is a risk you take ON YOUR OWN.
Worried about the legality of the pants-less? This post on LAist.com from before last year’s ride should set your mind at ease: http://laist.com/2008/12/30/no_pants_subway_ride_coming_to_los.php
Since No Pants 2K9 was LA’s first one, we learned a few things, so here are some additional suggestions. Agents should be dispersed fairly evenly on each platform so that we are distributed fairly evenly on the train instead of clumped up in one or two cars.
Bring a backpack, purse, or any other sort of bag in which to carry your pants. It’s always good to have them with you in the unlikely event you have to re-pants. Please do NOT disturb the civilians. We want to reiterate the importance of acting casual as it is the whole point of the mission.
This should also be fun for the passengers who are wearing pants, since their most likely reaction to us will be curiosity and amusement. Don’t worry, we’ll have plenty of pants-less fun when we get off the train and onto the street at Hollywood & Highland. And lastly, for those taking photos or videos of the event, try to be discreet and keep the cameras as hidden as possible.
At around 3:30pm we’ll have a pants-less debriefing at the Hollywood & Highland Center (either on the 2nd or 3rd level, wherever they have the most seating for us to gather (details will be posted on the twitter the day of), see http://www.hollywoodandhighland.com/information/center-map or http://www.hollywoodandhighland.com/assets/editor/file/HHdirectory_Inside.pdf). That’ll give us plenty of time to roam around and take pictures and for everyone in the area to bask in our pants-less glory. At the debriefing, you can meet your fellow GuerilLA agents, discuss this mission, give ideas for future missions, and learn how to get more involved.
